CLW SPEC NO. CLW/ES/3/0202
Introduction:
Switching of any voltage across an inductive load results in high reverse voltage build-up giving rise to transients This causes Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) in associated circuitry which might lead to malfunctioning of an electrical system. In a locomotive this might result in troubleshooting of a vital circuitry or damage to a critical semi-conductor that might cause undesired halting of the locomotive causing manifold problems. Hence it is an important precaution to arrest such interference at the very source to ensure smooth locomotive operation. A Varistor is a device which can absorb such unwanted electrical disturbances without affecting the normal operation of the circuit which the Varistor guards against Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) for trouble-free operation. The Varistor is encapsulated in flame-proof plastic to make it immune to dust and humidity and also fire-proof.
